Learn how to launch, grow, and protect your brand on Amazon in this information-packed webinar featuring Shannon Roddy of Marketplace Seller Courses. If you’re new to selling on Amazon or an experienced seller who wants to stay informed about the latest strategies, this is a great resource.
Roddy shares tips and strategies that are applicable for all Amazon businesses, but he particularly targets brand owners, manufacturers, inventors, entrepreneurs, and authorized resellers. If you fall into any of those categories, you’re going to want to grab a notebook and pull up a seat. In the meantime, here are some highlights.
According to Roddy, the key to success on Amazon is organically ranking for your product’s top converting keywords. It’s important, therefore, to become familiar with the concept of the Amazon flywheel. It’s a three-step process that you’ll need to do over and over again.
First, this requires optimizing your listings. Then, launch your product by driving targeted traffic to your listings before taking a step back to analyze the results. This includes looking at your sessions, conversion rate, click-through rate, product reviews, and more. “Take the analysis from those results and put it back into optimization, as well as your advertising,” Roddy advised.
In the webinar, Roddy also dives deep into what he calls the “Amazon Trifecta,” which he describes as “Discoverability + Viability = Rankability.” It all begins with the SEO keywords you use in your listing (discoverability), having an optimized detail page (viability), and the organic rank of your product (rankability). The guidance Roddy provides in this area is definitely worth a listen!
One of the first steps you can take to grow your brand on Amazon is to become familiar with the Amazon advertising territory. Roddy uses a fantastic visual of a kingdom with two castles in the webinar to represent search terms that fall into the following groups: Branded, Generic, Competitor, and Wasted.
As an Amazon seller, the first thing you want to do is defend your own castle, which consists of your branded search terms. Then, as Roddy explained, “Depending on the category, approximately 80% of all searches on Amazon are going to be unbranded or generics. Your greatest opportunity for growth is going after those generic terms.”
With your branded and generic search terms covered, “You can actually be even more aggressive and go after competitor search terms,” Roddy noted. By taking this step, you’ll “actually be invading their castle or territory… and that's the same reason why you want to bid on your own brand name, to keep other people from stealing branded sales from you.”
Finally, you want to avoid bidding on keywords that simply don’t convert. If you do, you’ll be wasting valuable time and ad spend on something that won’t do anything to grow your brand.
Some brand owners wonder, “Do I really need a trademark?” The truth is that using a trademark is one of the most effective ways to protect your brand from competitors. In fact, as Roddy explained, “Even if you're a private label looking to go to the brand level, it's absolutely essential.”
In the webinar, he highlights three main benefits of a trademark:
Can a trademark help you get rid of unauthorized resellers? Yes! “Using a trademark plus a warranty, you can create a material difference between your product and a product that a reseller is selling using a warranty,” said Roddy. “So, even though the products look exactly the same, [you can] legally remove unauthorized resellers so that you can control the platform and continue advertising and winning the Buy Box.”
