RestockPro and Amazon Warehousing & Distribution (AWD)

What is Amazon Warehousing & Distribution (AWD)?

Amazon Warehousing & Distribution (AWD) is Amazon’s upstream storage and replenishment service that allows sellers to store bulk inventory within Amazon’s logistics network before it is sent to Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA).

Instead of shipping products directly to FBA fulfillment centers, sellers can send larger quantities of inventory to AWD. Amazon then stores the inventory and automatically replenishes FBA when stock levels run low.

This creates a two-tier inventory system:

  • AWD – Long-term bulk storage and supply buffer
  • FBA – Fulfillment centers used for picking, packing, and shipping customer orders

Why AWD Is Valuable for Sellers

AWD helps sellers improve inventory efficiency while reducing the operational complexity of managing multiple warehouses.

Key benefits include:

  • Lower storage costs – AWD storage rates are often lower than standard FBA storage, especially during peak seasons.
  • Simplified logistics – Sellers can ship inventory to a single Amazon destination rather than managing multiple inbound shipments to FBA.
  • Automatic replenishment to FBA – Amazon can move inventory from AWD to FBA when stock levels drop, helping prevent stockouts.
  • Reduced inventory limits pressure – Storing inventory in AWD can help sellers maintain product availability even when FBA capacity limits are tight.
  • Better supply chain flexibility – AWD allows sellers to hold reserve inventory closer to Amazon’s fulfillment network.

How Sellers Use AWD to Manage FBA Inventory

Sellers typically use AWD as a buffer layer between suppliers and FBA.

A common workflow looks like this:

  1. Bulk inventory is sent to AWD from manufacturers or import shipments.
  2. AWD stores the inventory until it is needed.
  3. Inventory is replenished to FBA as stock levels decline.
  4. FBA fulfills customer orders as usual.

By separating bulk storage (AWD) from fulfillment inventory (FBA), sellers can:

  • Maintain higher overall inventory availability
  • Reduce stockout risk
  • Avoid sending oversized shipments to FBA
  • Smooth out supply chain variability
